TM occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own central nervous system, causing lifelong paralysis, muscle weakness, neuropathic pain, and other issues. Because TM often develops in the setting of viral and bacterial infections, there is a connection between the onset of TM and children who receive certain vaccinations.
